Steel City Summary: July 10, 2011 - Hines, Buccos at the Break, Mike Vrabel quits, USA W World Cup Team

Hines Ward in a game at Heinz Field, early in the 2010 season.

- Steelers fans were greeted Saturday morning with the news that iconic WR Hines Ward, the face of the Steelers franchise, was arrested Saturday morning for driving under the influence in his native DeKalb County, GA.  No details were released, so we really have no idea what really went down.  Was Ward subjected to a breathalyzer test?  Why was he pulled over?  Details will come, but for now the same thing to say is that Hines Ward should know better.  He has spent his Hall of Fame career in dignity and this is the first time he has been involved with Johnny Law.  Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and hope it turns out to be a mistake, but if not the Steelers haters will never let Steeler Nation live this one down.  Hines claims he was not driving drunk, time will tell.

- The Pittsburgh Pirates won their 47th game today to give them a 47-43 record heading into the All Star break.  This is by far the best record the Bucs have had at the break since 1992, and it seems the National media is finally started to pick up on this amazing story.  What do the Bucs do after the break, when Pedro Alvarez, Jose Tabata, Joe Beimel, and Ronny Cedeno all are ready to come back from their injuries?  What about the trade dealine coming in 2 short weeks?  Do the Bucs make a deal for a power hitter?  How about a 1st Baseman?  Will Lyle Overbay, Paul Maholm, Ryan Doumit still be wearing black and gold on July 31?  What about the future of Josh Harrison, Chase d'arnaud, and the other young players who have filled in well doing their time in Pittsburgh this summer?  Many roster moves are coming, and every move made will affect this team that is in a LEGIT pennant race.

- former Steelers LB Mike Vrabel quit the NFL today, leaving the Kansas City Chiefs without a starter at OLB.  Vrabel played 14 seasons in the NFL, including time with the Steelers.  His next job?  A return to his alma mater, Ohio State, to become LB Coach for a program that can use all the good karma it can get.  We wish Vrabel well in his future job, and hope that it works out for him.  Vrabel was a solid player for the Steelers, Patriots, and Chiefs over his 14 year career.

- The USA Womens World Cup Soccer team is dredging up memories of that fantastic 1999 team.  After defeated the heavily-favored Brazil squad today in penalty kicks to advance to the next round.  This team may be the "Team of Destiny".

- Congrats to Yankees SS Derek Jeter on his 3,000 hit.  Jeter may be the last player to ever accomplish this feat with the same team his entire career.  He was etched his name into the annuals of Yankee history by becoming the first Yankee to do so.

- Congrats to Pirates SP Kevin Correia, who is now heading to Arizona for the All Star Game after being named as a replacement.  Although he had to backdoor his way into the nod, it is amazing to see a guy who has had a great season for the Bucs get to the promise land.  The Pirates now have 3 All-Stars for the first time since 1990.

Have a great week Steel World Order!
